Supported by: Sida

This program has had three main components: (a) advocacy and lobbying at the national and international level for the protection and promotion of women's rights; (b) institutional development/organizational strengthening of AWEN and its members; (c) providing support to AWEN members in order to provide specialized services, organize sensitization and advocacy initiatives, as well as build capacities to protect and improve women's rights.

Through this intervention it has been achieved:

  • Improvement and implementation of policies and legal framework by law enforcers for the protection and promotion of women's rights.
  • 9 member organizations of AWEN have been supported with tailored interventions for capacity building.
  • The provision of specialized support services and the implementation of sensitization and advocacy initiatives.

"Gender equality is a right! Strengthening the activism for women's rights in the remote areas of Albania"

Implementation period: June 2021-May 2022

Supported by: Small Grants Program – US Embassy

The project implemented a comprehensive intervention aimed at empowering women and addressing gender-based violence. The intervention was focused on two levels—local level (Lushnje, Kavajë, Tropoje) and national level. Through fieldwork and contacts with local organizations, AWEN identified two problems: (a) local civil society organizations and change agents that protect and promote human rights in general and women's rights in particular are weak; and (b) local government representatives have limited information about human rights in general and women's rights in particular. The project aimed to address these two problems and improve the situation.

Through this intervention it has been achieved:

  • Greater capacity of local organizations, community groups, or other local actors to better protect and serve girls/women in the community.
  • Higher levels of information and awareness among girls and women about their rights.
  • Higher levels of sensitivity of communities to the rights of girls/women.

Protection of criminal victims

During the last 6 months, AWEN has been defending 19 victims of criminal offenses in the District Courts. All cases have experienced crimes of gender-based violence against them and their family members.
