A new beginning for "Flutura"

Ms. “Flutura”, a 39-year-old mother of two minor daughters, endured approximately 15 years of continuous domestic abuse by her husband. Married since 2009, the relationship began peacefully but quickly devolved into a cycle of psychological abuse, fear, intimidation, and eventually physical violence, often witnessed by their children. Her husband struggled with alcohol dependency and gambling, which fueled his aggression and instability.

In 2017, while briefly living in Germany as asylum seekers, she reported the abuse for the first time to German authorities. However, after returning to Albania, the same pattern of abuse resumed. Despite her efforts to preserve the family unit, the violence escalated over time.

In February 2025, after a particularly severe episode of domestic violence, carried out in front of their daughters, Ms. “Flutura”. finally sought protection. She was referred to the Albanian Women Empowerment Network (AWEN) by a human’s rights activist. Following her report to the police, her husband was arrested and later sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison for domestic violence in the presence of minors, under Article 130/a/4 of the Albanian Penal Code.

In just four months, with the support of AWEN, Ms. “Flutura” received:

·       Free legal aid and court representation

·       In-office legal counseling

·       Exemption from all court-related expenses, including psychological expert fees

·       A divorce lawsuit filed and initiated

·       Assistance with custody and child support arrangements

·       Restriction of the father's visitation rights to once a month, due to his abusive behavior

Today, Ms. “Flutura” is rebuilding her life with dignity and determination. She is employed, her children are safe, and her divorce process is nearing completion. This case illustrates the transformative power of timely and coordinated support for women who have survived years of abuse.

"Today I feel free and independent. I raise my children with love and dedication, I work and provide for my own income. I feel like, step by step, I am regaining control over my life."
