Awareness campaign with community members

AWEN, in collaboration with "Jona" association, focused on organizing an awareness campaign with community members in the city of Saranda during June and July 2022. The campaign consisted of three sessions addressing domestic violence, including its causes and consequences, relevant legislation, and an understanding of the violence referral mechanism.

The first session targeted students from the "Hasan Tahsini" high school. The discussion centered around violence in family relationships, prevention strategies, and a detailed explanation of how the violence referral mechanism operates. Through a hypothetical case of violence, the students were provided with insights into how the mechanism functions, who the initial contacts are, and how cases are referred to relevant institutions.

The other two sessions were conducted with community members from different neighborhoods of Saranda. Participants were familiarized with the violence referral mechanism and educated on ways to prevent the escalation of violent incidents.

The objective of these activities was to raise awareness and sensitize the community to the issues of domestic violence and provide guidance on reporting cases of violence.

These awareness sessions are part of the project "Strengthening the coordinated response of service providers from the police, health, education, and local government sectors to manage cases related to all forms of violence against women, in accordance with CEDAW standards and the Istanbul Convention." The project is funded by the EU, supported by UN Women, and implemented by AWEN.

Protection of criminal victims

During the last 6 months, AWEN has been defending 19 victims of criminal offenses in the District Courts. All cases have experienced crimes of gender-based violence against them and their family members.
